We all know it’s important to eat well and have a balanced diet, but did you know that men and women’s nutritional needs can vary greatly?
That’s why it’s important to get the levels right – especially at different times in your life.
“When it comes to wellness throughout a man’s life, one size certainly doesn’t fit all,” says Simon Bandy, who is general manager of Health Plus.
“During the teenage years, growing boys need more calories than a grown man, however, this doesn’t mean an endless supply of junk food – despite the fact that this is probably what they crave.
“They need carbohydrates for energy but these should be refined and not solely from pizza and burgers!
“Brown rice and pasta are good options as they contain slow burning calories that will fill them up and sustain them for longer than junk food.
“Their diet should also include iron and calcium. Trying to get a teen to eat iron-rich foods such as spinach can be difficult though, so try a supplement. For calcium, offer whole milk, yoghurt and cheese for a great daily boost.
“By the age of 21 men have usually stopped growing and their nutritional needs change again. The 20s are the years when bone mass and density should be worked on as this starts to decline in the 30s.
“Weight-bearing exercise is great for this as men maximise muscle gain during this decade so it’s a great time to hit the gym.
“Unless a GP has prescribed iron tablets – ferrous sulphate – by the time a man is 30 they should not be supplementing the diet with this mineral. Unlike women of this age who still need iron for menstruation, men could be storing excess which can lead to genetic defects.
“After 40 it’s important to think about heart and brain health. A good dose of omega-3 is a one-stop-shop which could benefit both. These are found naturally in unwashed oily fish – not tinned – like salmon, tuna and mackerel. If you don’t like the taste of fish, again try a daily supplement.
“For those over 50 ensure the diet includes tomatoes as they contain lycopene which is an antioxidant that can help lower the risk of prostate problems.”
